A "Casale"
The term
"casale" --clearly related to 'casa' (house)-- means "large farmhouse".
Many of the ones that used to dot the outlying areas of Naples--such
as the one in the photo-- have fallen into ruin simply because the areas
are no longer "outlying" --they are now part of the city. The photo shows
one such example (called the "Tower of Ranieri" by the locals) at the
Posillipo end of a very busy street named
Via Manzoni. The structure has been "restored" into a monument to remind
us that the area was once nothing but farmland.
